As we all are aware, Food Adulteration is spreading massively all around the world. Today no one has an idea as to which food is actually healthy. There are a lot of food ads saying that we sell fresh food, but do we trust them? No. From vegetables to fruits, from juices to spices everything is adulterated. Even water is said to be having a lot of minerals but at the end it is the contaminated water that is processed which is not so good for health










Knowing the danger of health problems caused by food adulteration, it is crucial for consumers to know:

  • Common Adulterants and its Risks:

Milk- water, detergents, starch, synthetic milk powder, chemicals., to give extra volume to milk and store it for a longer period of time. This can cause various health related issues like kidney and digestive infection, food poisoning.

Spices: Lead chromate in turmeric(haldi), Sudan dye in red chilli are added to enhance the appearance of the spices. These toxic substance can result to have cancer 

Vegetables: Chemical ripeners like calcium carbide and ethephon are used to artificially ripen fruits and vegetables, leading to gastrointestinal and neurological issues.

There are both short-term and long-term health risks associated with eating tainted food. Palpitations, diarrhoea, vomiting, and food poisoning are among the short-term side effects. Cancer, heart disease, liver and kidney damage, and other major health issues can arise from prolonged exposure to adulterants. Particularly vulnerable demographics include young people, expectant mothers, and the elderly.






  • Identification and Preventive Measures

Customers can identify and stay away from contaminated food by following these steps:


Visual Inspection: Keep an eye out for odd scents, colours, and textures. For example, turmeric that is excessively bright yellow in colour may contain artificial colouring.

Easy at-home exams: Carry out simple examinations in your own home. Take milk and add a few drops of iodine solution, for instance. Starch is indicated by a blue-black colour.

Purchase Approved Items: Invest in products bearing reputable certifications that attest to compliance with safety regulations, such as USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, or FSSAI in India.

Examine the labels: Read ingredient labels carefully, and steer clear of products that contain additives that are unclear or seem suspect.

  • Authorities' Function:

Food safety is ensured by government organisations such as the FDA in the US, EFSA in Europe, and FSSAI in India. In order to stop food adulteration, these organisations establish rules and carry out inspections. However, thorough monitoring is difficult due to the size of the food industry. Therefore, customer awareness is essential.
